4/0 size level drag reel question
A perfect rod for it is the 8ft deluxe 40-50 star rod with the no foul guides I've had mine 11 years and put it to the test more than enough to kno that its a beast and for a good price plus it casts well I thro a 4/0 on it and will slimg it 70 yards or more with just a weight and when chunkin baits its a solid 50 plus like I said shit wont break lol almost ten foot sand tiger vertical pier side no problem and walked him like that bout 1000 feet or so

You'll love it Im a firm believer in star rods and their quality and they last forever I used to use nothing but the b-50 they made its a 50-80 class rod but they stopped makin em last I heard and started goin standup for rods that heavy and the one I got is one of the best offshore bottom fishing rods believe me you'll definitely be happy with your purchase
I am curios if you could just crank 20lbs with the avet... I understand it can hold a dead lift but there is definitely going to be a number where you will not be able to turn the handle. I understand that if your strong you could crank more weight then a 10 year old girl... but even if your super man there is going to a point where just cranking is going to get extremely hard... the reel is going to torque to the handle side bad. so with that said, I am not sure if you could just wind 20lbs off the ground with a 4/0 size reel. If I owned one I would go try it for ya.
Dustin go wind up 20lbs and tell us how hard it is would ya.

I think your nuts if you would try and dead lift 20lbs with a 8' 40lb rod... think about what a 130lb rod looks like with a 40lb dead lift. Your asking for a two piece rod if you dead lift a 20lb fish flopping around on a 40lb rod. Maybe a new age jigging blank might hold up better.
CJ has a point, trying to use a FISHING reel as a WINCH, is not their purpose or design, you are going to get quite a few fish up but eventually your real is going to bust. For example, on the senators, when you try reeling when you are stuck on the bottom, you are damaging the dog and that is really hard to replace mechanically, so my suggestion would be to just take your time and gaff or net your fish, a few fish isn't worth your nice reels.
Just an average fisherman.
You can always use the shovel style fishing to help you crank.... like this

You'd be surprised with that star rod cj I've flipped 20 lb kings and jack over tje edge with it easily had the rod bent from tip to butt and it wont break the rods they build are high quality and its tgw best of both worlds for power and casting.
Thats cool! I really dont know much about that rod, but with the new age materials in rods I believe ya! I have seen some rods here lately that blow my mind as far as strength. 30-40lb rods dead lifting extreme weights.
